Most people think that to educate a child involves filling an empty
vessel full of facts and information. While that certainly is part of the
education equation, it is not the essence of a true education. So often
today children aren't educated, but rather they are schooled or puffed
up with knowledge. True education involves teaching children how to
think critically, and developing a Godly character of obedience "for the
works He prepared for them to walk in". In other words, true education
also involves allowing time to simply 'be' and to contemplate life.
Rather than looking to a canned curriculum for reassurance that true
education is happening, look to the Lord for a daily renewing of the
mind. The traditional-school mindset has very deep-seated roots in our
society. Ask God to show you the meaning of true education. No
matter the area of our lives on which He sheds his light, there will be
much joy and self-discipline. The key is seeking to understand His
ways first, which is also key to developing Godly character. What
passes for education in todays's schools is a far cry from true
education, or God's way of wisdom and developing Godly character. If
Godly character has not been sufficiently developed, then even
Biblical knowledge can be misused in a puffed up way.
How do we know whether we are providing our homeschoolers with
true education in God's way? By the fruit it produces, of course.
Traditional schools are producing the bitter fruit of emptiness and
apathy amongst students, and burn-out and frustration amongst the
teachers. There's an abundance of people who have a lot of facts and
information in their heads, but a real scarcity of Godly character and
values. God's ways always produce the sweet fruit of joy and
self-discipline. Seek to give your children a true education, steeped in
developing a Godly character, and it will serve them well throughout
their lifetime.
